millen,I suppose "magical" means different things to different people- there could be magic going on and/or the atmosphere is one of supernatural events and/or connections- events or atmosphere unlikely in reality. That's a problem as suspension of disbelief is almost universal in movies!
However, according to my sense of "magical" movies:
1. "La Belle et la Bette" (Beauty and the Beast) Cocteau, 1946
"Nosferatu" (Murnau)
"The Battleship Potemkin"
"Orlando"
"Forbidden Planet"
"That Obscure Object of Desire"
"Un chien andalou"
"Blade Runner"
"Wizard of Oz"
"Pinocchio"
"The Trial"
"Time Bandits'
"The Adventures of Baron Munchausen"
"The Fisher King"
"Prospero’s Books"
"Rebecca"
"The Bishop's Wife"
"Here comes Mr. Jordan"
"A Midsummer Night’s Dream" (1936)
"The Ghost and Mrs. Muir"
"Tommy"
"Zelig"
"The Legend of 1900"
"The Fifth Element"
"The Navigator"
"Beetlejuice"
"Starman" - thanks for the reminder mr. g !And yes, "Lord of the Rings"
These are not in any order of preference- except- Cocteau's "La Belle et la Bette" which is the undisputed No. 1 for me.
Cheers,
Bambi B
Jean Vigo´s "L'Atalante", and a couple of Erice´s: "El Sur" and "El Espíritu de la Colmena" ("The Spirit of the Beehive")They all have that touch of eeriness which later haunts you for quite some time: that´s much of what "magic" means to me.
Regards
I would addPlanet of the Storms.
or at least,
20,000 Legues Under the Sea, or La Belle et la Bete.
Or The Thief of Bagdad, or Robin Hood,
Or Star Wars, (original unretouched).
Or any Disney cartoon before dvd, laser disk, vhs, beta, or cable.
Or Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
or Willie Wonka and the Chocalot Factory, (original),
or The Red Shoes
or One Million Years B.C. (Hammer version)
or Horror Express.
What a bunch of sleepers, even if the sum is worse that each titles in itself.

What a bunch of sleepers, even if the sum is worse that each titles in itself.
I knew that would come.
But you did understand what I meant, did you not?!

i have it really not understood, true not. i swear it by the grave of my mother.
but i believe that your mother language is german, is it not so? it sounds so sweet when you translate german idiom word for word into the english.
No, i have it really not understood.
Nothing for ungood!
I know that you a man with many self-irony are.

I meant: The list as such is bad but so is not every film in it is.
No French.
But I live in Germany.
Nothing for ungood!
Of course not, dear Will...

Your Russian could use some polishing... :-)

Of course it could.
More: it should.
But as I see, it stimulated a wonderful choke reflex …..

I would also add Smiley (1956) to the list.
Not necessarily substitutions to others worthy ones listed, but definitely worth mentioningThe Natural
Legend
2001
Whale Rider
The Princess Bride
Chocolat
The Truman Show
Just thought this subject needed some... well... controversy.

I remember hearing some critic say that Capra was so embarrased by IAWL that he bought it and locked it up. That's why you can't find anyone who remembers seeing it before the 60s. Is there any truth to the story?
![]()
This was the first and last time that Frank Capra produced, financed, directed and co-wrote one of his films. It cost $37 million but earned only $3 million. This was the reason "no one" saw it. Capra often said it was his favorite of his films.

That seems downright criminal.

1. I Have Heard The Mermaids Singing (brilliant)
2. Goodbye Mr Chips
3. Harvey
4. El Topo
5. The Wizard of OzI think K.Pax & The Big Lebowski are pretty magical, too.
Jeff Bridges is in both, btw.
