and haunting.
For those familiar with Tarkovsky, there are recurring images, i.e. multiple images of water (rain, stream, hand-washing), reflections, a horse running around, a de Hooch like inside-outside
perspective, and a playfulness with time.
I especially liked when the wonderfully named Dr. Snaut talked of the importance of the mirror...
Does anyone weave intellectual concerns into his films any better? Tolstoy, Cervantes, Dostoyevsky, assorted classical composers, Dutch painters--- all skillfully woven into the narrative thread.
Awhile back, I recall seeing one of his films somewhere... I think it was called "The Stalker." Anyone seen it?

Follow Ups:
...at the Esquire Theater (now sadly torn down) where, alas, vodka was not allowed.Impressed me then (I had read the book) and still very effective.

That flick probably is more watchable, not to mention disturbing and haunting, when served with cheap domestic vodka. :o)
While pretty much every one of them is unknown in the West, they represent cream of the crop of Russian acting school of that time.

He was excellent, striking just the right note of skepticism and professionalism. Messenger, one of the scientists shown in the film within a film, was very powerful in such a small role.
Burton also is memorable. Very much so. His aging was done so skillfully it is indetectable whether in real life he really was younger or older?
The weak links were the father and mother. She especially was terrible...
Very small quibbles, though, in what is one of the finest sci-fi films of all, and a great film, period.

***Burton also is memorable.I presume you mean Berton - played by Dvorzhetsky... I love that actor! He didn't live to be 40... shame...
The guy who plays Sartorius also was in the Mirror, another great talent.
Banionis is incredible, but I don't see any of his films availabe here.
But get off the subject - AuPh is getting really restless!

I don't, but I will try to find out when I have time.I always loved him, his unusual cold face with deep emotions hidden under icy appearance.
Perhaps his best role was general Khludov in "Beg" based on Bulgakov's material. I think it might be available with English subs, so I highly recommend it. The film itself is not great in my view (although very nightly rated on imdb), but there are wonderful performances. Would be a very nice new branch from mainstream to investigate, I think.

And I tried several times. There are those who swear by that work, but I suppose it is just not for me.

I thought the Solaris remake was excellent. Although different, the remake touched upon the depth of the story that the original left undeveloped. I thought Clooney was excellent too.I thought the original was flawed because of political and budget contraints. Couldn't we have done with a few minutes less of the freeway drive?
