"Homicide" is my favorite Mamet film and is as reeifying and disturbing an examination of evil as "Chinatown', another masterpiece. Mamet's favorite actor Joe Montegna plays Detective Gold. a seasoned Baltimore Police homicide investigator and hostage negotiator who is ordered off an important case (finding bad guy Ving Rhames) to help a wealthy Jewish family who believes they have been targeted. A Jew himself, Gold believes the new case to be frivolous. until he starts to investigate it and is gradulally seduced into militant Jewish pursuits. Gold's partner Sully (William H. Macy) ridicules Gold's increasing distraction from the original case. A host of usual Mamet regulars appear as backup characters, including wife Rebecca Pigeon. Wonderful Mamet dialog, with great lines like "FBI couldn't find Joe Louis in a bowl of rice!"

I used to think Mamet was more effective on the stage, especially with his rep group who could really get the rhythm of his lines singing and dancing in live performance. But Mamet has done OK as a director. Games is my favorite, followed by the Winslow Boy and Homicide.

...but I was so immersed in Jeremy Northram I thought she was just fine.

Although the thought of Mamet and Ellroy getting together for script re-writes is a little frightening.

..I can't see him using Josh Hartnett for the lead for one thing.

... I do like the thought of him and Ellroy kicking a script around... or to death.
Ellroy talks like a Grougho Marks character and I think the trade off might produce something electric even if Ellroy thinks film a second rate medium (at least as far as his books are concerned).
