And I was rivetted. NIcholson steals the film. My friens said he must have an ego as big as Africa. Maybe his talent matches it.
The scene where he impersonates the rat and the light catches his teeth and eyes... you could hear the entire audience jump at the look of pure... devil he conjured.
DeCaprio seems to have completely turned his back on the pretty boy films and roles and I was impressed
Isit in the same class as some of Scorsese's finest? I don't know, but by most people's standards its trmendously good. Too long? Well I don't think that's the issue as the time shot past for me and I am a notorious clock watcher.

I think this is one of Decaprio's better films. I complained several years ago regarding him in the Gangs of New York--he wasn't a formidable opponent to play opposite the monstrosity played by Daniel Day Lewis. Hence I never believed that he could battle Lewis' character.
For whatever reason, I didn't care for DiCaprio playing Howard Hughes, and found that movie boring with the exception of Kate Blanchett's performance.
But DiCaprio has grown up and put on a little muscle, and I thought he was terrific in "The Departed." And so was Wahlberg.

...what film as Nicholson NOT stolen that he's been in.There was a trailer for the new Rocky movie - the audience laughed at the end of this.
Excellent, excellent film. One of Nicholson's better efforts - not
that he's ever had a poor effort, mind you - and the remainder of the
cast was very solid as well. Esp. the shrink. I need to go see it
again, however, since I had trouble following some parts of the plot
and keeping the characters sorted out.I HATED the music. HATED it.

What about Kubrick films? What about "American Grafitti"?
funny, when he did the rat impression 'my' audience laughed! I do not mean to undermine your review but it is interesting...I greatly enjoyed this movie and liked Mark Whalberg, I think he bettered Martin Sheen, or maybe just had a better role, but in a lot of the same scenes together he really stood out. Leo was great as well and I agree - a convincing tough guy. Matt Damon, who I really like in the Bourne films seems to be reprising his roles from them - something about his voice, the tone and pace seemed excactly the same to me. Nicholson is terrific and well cast, his giant ego seems to fit a snake like the villian he plays here.
Overall I liked the fast pace and big complicated story we get here. It was written very intelligently with easy to understand dialogue and circimstances. The story ends up being quite scary because you know this kind of corruption is really going on and I would wet myself being in any of their shoes. :^)
I highly recommend this movie and think it is in the same league as Goodfellas with a more enjoyable story for my tastes.
I thought the reaction and maybe even mine was shock and then the laughter of relief... but I could be wrong.
WAs it just me or did the Matt and Leo characters start to dress alike and have similar haircuts towards the end? Not in the office but outside they had wincheaters and that hairdo that's all brushed forwards aaprt from the very front (sorry, best way I can describe it).
I know the line at the start (here comes spoiler ALERT)... when you're satring at a gun, what's the difference? and I figured it was to do with that. For instance, in the porn cinema and afterwards in the street, they looked very alike.
I remember thinking about the similarity between them too but with just a passing thought, maybe it was a clue as to the direction the movie was going? We are probably reading too much into it - based on reviews of many directors I have seen, these things are often coincidents...I actully laughed many times in this movie, I think it may have to do with a script that keeps you on your toes by being so cleverly written - you are more likely to react because there is no time for you to manage yourself and reactions.
The continual abuse that almost everyone directs at everyone else, and pointedly its sexual/genser bias nature is presumably to locate the similar sensibilities of both camps.
Some of it is pretty funny isn't it?
It was to circle back to the beginning, where they are virtually indistinguishable in the Police Academy training montage.
