It brings up the question of how these films are received in Germany? It's my impression that most anything having to do with Nazi Germany is scrutinized closely so as not to give the wrong nationalistic vibe. So, do films of this nature (few as they may be) draw large audiences? Anybody know off hand?
Follow Ups:
I enjoyed it, especially the performance by Bruno Ganz. It wasn't a great film but certainly better than average and worthy of recommendation to those interested in WWII history.

This picture was very well received in Germany following a bit of a discussion as if the portrayal was not to human, as far as AH is concerned.
Then a bit of of stirr about Fest who wrote the book.Anyway, in my eyes now a very bad film.
I never like it but now even less.
As a good story sticking to the truth do not make automatically a good film.

I'm wondering besides your run of the mill skinheads who the turnout is for this kind of film . . .This movie certainly put a human face on der fuhrer without getting censored.
Why should it have been censored? Because he show a human Hitler?
I do not like it either, but after all he was.( human )
It is a halfway- to good bio and a lousy film.
And that is it. ( for me )

"As a good story sticking to the truth do not make automatically a good film."There are different reasons to see a film. One reason is to see history dramatized, and hopefully to learn some insight previously unknown. Downfall succeeds in that the viewer learns of historical events which were previously unknown. Those were its goals, and I would argue, is good because it acheived those goals, which no other film on the subject accomplished, save for the documentary on which it is based.

There are books, and there is this film with sir Alec...
When I see a film I wish and hope that it is good. And I am not satisfied with something less.
Even if from some interesst.
It is a documentary and not a " film " then...
