Nice cinematography, hair makeup and costume. Yeah, Jennifer Hudson sure can sing. But what is all this about Eddie Murphy or Jennifer Hudson winning awards for acting? They really weren't all that good let alone outstanding. Hudson made many beginer's mistakes including not knowing what to do with her hands. Murphy at his best in this movie was just doing an SNL character, at times he was barely there. Why is it that all a comedian has to do to be praised as a great actor these days is tone his act down to nothing? The movie was nice light entertainment with some awkward moments of transitions between being a movie about music and a musical production. Nice trip dowm memory lane. The looks and the sounds were quite nostalgic. The attempts to tie into the social revolutions of the times were lame and superficial. Oh and Beyonce is serious eye candy. She can't act but she does grace the screen with her beauty.

Follow Ups:
in a straight acting role. My problem with this musical is that I thought the music was unremarkable and even a little boring. Good music equals a good musical...in this case, it was just OK, despite the talent on display.

I agree that Murphy and Hudson were good in their roles AND Beyonce is a beauty to be sure....the "makeover" shots of her to look like Diana Ross were remarkable too bad she can't act or sing like Ross.....This film was made (like A Chorus Line) 10-15 years too late...Musicals need to transition to the screen quicker than traditionally they do....Although I will say the adaptation of Chicago was good...but one must wonder what it might have been like directed by Fosse and perhaps starring Minnelli in her hey day.....Dreamgirls will win some awards here and there...but nothing major...it just wasn't at the caliber of Chicago....

For me the character was sort of a cheap SNL impression of LittleRichard/Jamees Brown. When he was in decline I saw no depth of emotion. Just low key line reading/hitting the marks type acting. What am I missing? i saw no complexity, humanity or anything there.

there was the drug situation and the somewhat clumsy subplot about him trying to do his own kind of music...but this is a musical and I thought he shone brightly in his musical numbers. More than an impression for me, I thought he nailed them and they were the high points of the movie for me. As well as the least boring music. Now Jennifer Hudson's showpiece brought the house down, people were applauding in the middle of it. But would I want to listen to that song as a song? I would not. Too many extra syllables added to each word. That kind of mannered singing bothers me.

I expect a lot more when people start talking Oscar for these kinds of roles.
