A beautiful movie. "In my Father's house there are many mansions."

Follow Ups:
Solaris the remake was a wonderful film! It conveyed some of the futility and narcissism that can undermine relationships and presented it in a poignant and powerful way .I admit, felt a bit sleepy the first time I watched Solaris, but I suggest you try a second viewing - it was worth it for me!
Clooney gave a great performance and so did the supporting cast.
As for the original Solaris - I am aware of the budget constrictions etc - but yes, I got lost on the freeway too!
![]()
1972 low budget and it is still an outstanding movie. The freeway? The mechanicalness and speed of the industrialized, rationalized, commodified world. You are aware that the Russian government of that time tried to censor this movie?
![]()
... that the original film was made during a tumultuous period for artists in Russia.I myself, am unable to read what you did into the 5 minute plus freeway ride. I saw it as inappropriate for the time period, and tedious filler.

I guess we read different things. I never said I liked that sequence, but I endured it and tried to find a meaning for it. Hey, I could be wrong, huh?
![]()
Unfortunately, I found no discernable meaning beyond either a) the pretensions of a filmmaker engrossed in his own work, or more likely, b) the cameraman's failure to hear Tarkovsky yelling "CUT!" and after rolling film for 10 minutes the fear of repercussions from Soviet bean-counters if the production wasted that film stock. :o)My wife and I both fell asleep watching Tarkovsky's Solaris and I've tried to make it through it on more than one occasion with no success (even a pot of coffee didn't help!). BTW, my wife was even more bored by this film than I was (if that's possible), and for the purpose of reference, she isn't into video games or other trivial pursuits (she's a corporate executive and renowned novelist). I'm compelled to concur with her impressions based upon my own experiences with this film.
Victor likes to chide those who don't get into Solaris with as much ferver as he does while ridiculing LoTR and other beautifully made films. This is either a personal problem on his part or maybe his scabbard fits a little too snuggly these days and the constriction impacts his mood. ;^)

I'm aware that I'm like everyone else and seek instant gratification. Maybe that's not what heaven is about.

It is kind of funny to hear the complains about this 3 hour masterpiece from those who had wasted many hours on trash like LoTR that does not engage a single brain cell.Solaris invites you to think, to meditate along, and its slow pace makes it perfect for that - instead of just gobbling up the shit some Hollywood maker shovels your way with no pause or break.
View it in one shot, you will see what the artist is trying to tell you.
Don't you folks EVER sit by the lake watching the waves and fish playing? Are computer games all you can now swallow?
How about poetry? Art? Are you like those Japanese tourists parading in quick pace through the Louvre's rooms? I saw this... check... I saw that... check... next room...

Sounds like a stereotype to me. Might make objective movie reviews problematic.

Doesn't sound like you've been to Louvre.Or maybe you've been there, but looked at paintings instead of watching the crowds. Do better next time.

Good Art like the Schubert String Quartet in G major D887 op.post.161 i just got in the mail and your VK-200 is driving into the room is good Art.Solaris is Good Art.If Don Juan Were a Woman, which i watched last night was not such good Art but BB sure had a cute tush, alot cuter than Ian McKellan's.

Although Victor probably prefers Sherbet to Schubert if the truth were known. ;^)
![]()
Truth be told this is the first Schubert work I've ever owned.I don't regret the purchase and it doesn't need Grey Poopon either..

... if you insist on mercilessly stroking VK's ego when he makes a jejune recommendation then the team of proctologists who've been working around the clock to extract Victor's cranium from his rectal cavity may fail in their heroic efforts even before the application of grey poupon lubricants! Trust me, send the chocolates, but be discrete (don't tell patrick that you want to be Victor's Solaris mate, ...it's too close to Valentine's Day). Just teasin'! ;^)
... that you're still deluding yourself that it takes more than one brain cell to engage in the consumption of grey poupon (pretentiously symbolic, plotless & plodding, euro mustard slathered film fare).> > > "Solaris invites you to think, to meditate along..." < < <
Yeah, to meditate with your eyes closed; it's called s-l-e-e-p-i-n-g! ;^)
> > > "...instead of just gobbling up the shit some Hollywood maker shovels your way with no pause or break." < < <
So, you think that slathering on the grey poupon makes your Euro-$#!+ taste better? ;^D
> > > "View it in one shot, you will see what the artist is trying to tell you." < < <
Perhaps, but a shot of fine single malt is usually preferable to a shot of cheap vodka, don't ya think? ;^)
> > > "Don't you folks EVER sit by the lake watching the waves and fish playing?" < < <
Yeah, my grandmother used to sit by the lake watch the waves and fish in her declining years, and that was boring as well. What's your point?
> > > "Are computer games all you can now swallow?" < < <
Why is it that you assume everyone who doesn't see the 'vision' as you do is automatically into video games, is brain-dead or whatever? Heck, not everyone dresses in Napoleonic panteloons and rattles their collection of cuttlery at folks to get their jollies either, but whatever floats your dinghy!
> > > "How about poetry? Art?" < < <
LOL! Why should anyone look to you for art or poetry recommendations? I realize that you have an ego bigger than the Film or Outside board has bandwidth, ...but sheeesh!
> > > "Are you like those Japanese tourists parading in quick pace through the Louvre's rooms? I saw this... check... I saw that... check... next room..." < < <
Ummm, have you ever considered the possibility that it might be the failing of the tour guide rather than the tourists? ;^)
However, I disagree about Lord of the Rings. I don't think those movies are trash.

I love both films, but of course prefer Tarkovsky's. My wife tried to watch the original film with me twice, and fell asleep both times durring the "freeway trip" segment. When the Soderberg version came out our son bought it for me. My wife tried to watch it and it put her to sleep almost as quickly...
I want to see the Clooney remake as well. I've even been considering purchasing the Tarkovsky.

If he likes the original film why would he need pillows for the remake which is much shorter and faster paced?
... with the general observation that one gets out of art what one brings to it. Based on my experience, pillows seem appropo for either screening, the difference being the Soderberg version is more like a nap compared to Tarkovsky's Rip Van Winkle-esque coma. :o)
