  Solaris the remake was a wonderful film! It conveyed some of the futility and narcissism that can undermine relationships and presented it in a poignant and powerful way .

  I admit, felt a bit sleepy the first time I watched Solaris, but I suggest you try a second viewing - it was worth it for me!

  Clooney gave a great performance and so did the supporting cast.

  As for the original Solaris - I am aware of the budget constrictions etc - but yes, I got lost on the freeway too!

          Unfortunately, I found no discernable meaning beyond either a) the pretensions of a filmmaker engrossed in his own work, or more likely, b) the cameraman's failure to hear Tarkovsky yelling "CUT!" and after rolling film for 10 minutes the fear of repercussions from Soviet bean-counters if the production wasted that film stock. :o)

          My wife and I both fell asleep watching Tarkovsky's Solaris and I've tried to make it through it on more than one occasion with no success (even a pot of coffee didn't help!). BTW, my wife was even more bored by this film than I was (if that's possible), and for the purpose of reference, she isn't into video games or other trivial pursuits (she's a corporate executive and renowned novelist). I'm compelled to concur with her impressions based upon my own experiences with this film.

          Victor likes to chide those who don't get into Solaris with as much ferver as he does while ridiculing LoTR and other beautifully made films. This is either a personal problem on his part or maybe his scabbard fits a little too snuggly these days and the constriction impacts his mood. ;^)

      Solaris invites you to think, to meditate along, and its slow pace makes it perfect for that - instead of just gobbling up the shit some Hollywood maker shovels your way with no pause or break.

      View it in one shot, you will see what the artist is trying to tell you.

      Don't you folks EVER sit by the lake watching the waves and fish playing? Are computer games all you can now swallow?

    I love both films, but of course prefer Tarkovsky's. My wife tried to watch the original film with me twice, and fell asleep both times durring the "freeway trip" segment.

    When the Soderberg version came out our son bought it for me. My wife tried to watch it and it put her to sleep almost as quickly...

            ... with the general observation that one gets out of art what one brings to it. Based on my experience, pillows seem appropo for either screening, the difference being the Soderberg version is more like a nap compared to Tarkovsky's Rip Van Winkle-esque coma. :o)
