A perfect work of art with as fine a group of actors as ever I've seen in one film. Not one flaw; a genuine masterpiece.
I have always thought Auteil's "breakthrough" role as Lacenaire in "The Elegant Criminal," was overrated. Well, playing the same character, Marcel Herrand turns in one of the greatest film performances I've ever seen: he creates a fully formed character---philosophy, temperament, morals---in very few scenes with little dialogue. Charming, intelligent, and a cold-blooded murderer. Convincingly played!
A truly astonishing performance.
At any rate, this film is so famous, I won't bother to say much except that it belongs up there on anyone's "15 Best Films" list.
I IMDB'd Monsieur Herrand and I'm a little shocked he didn't have a more illustrious career, at least in film.
Lacenaire lives.
Follow Ups:
...The Longest Day? I know they are in the movie and I seem to recall (probably incorrectly) that they play an elderly husband and wife who welcome the American liberators on D-Day.

Well a classical, a good film. But sublime? I dunno.
But it must be twenty years at least, that I have seen it...
The actors were all right, more on the pantomine side, but the film THAT good...
I dunno...

Perhaps even more interesting the career of Arletty, who was accused of being a "horizontal collaborator" and arrested, with her life going steeply downhill from there.http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001916/bio

horreur! A collaborator!
Pierre Renoir almost stole the film, I neglected to mention, for his sinister portrayal of the street vendor.
Remember Maria Casares in "Orfeu?" Yet, she is so sweet as Nathalie...

It being Valentine's Day tomorrow:I was dating my future wife 24 years ago when she asked me to see Children of Paradise at an art house in San Francisco. I instantly loved the film (and we have seen it at least a dozen times since then.) She confessed to me a few years ago that if I had not liked the movie, she would have stopped seeing me!
A somewhat similar story here... my wife and I saw the film while still dating... back in... man... so long ago... anyways... I never found out how close I was to being dumped...
