  For only $2 admission, seen widescreen in THX surround at the local second run emporium, I thought it was an enjoyable way to spend a rainy winter afternoon.

  I much preferred the sci-fi fairy tale Dark City, from director Alex Proyas, which came out earlier. (Rufus Sewewll, yummmm!)

  Well, what effects after all ? Jumping roof-to-roof ? Clint Eastwood did it (or pretended to do). Copter crash ? Shootouts ? Cops morphing into feds ? Watched it a few hundred times before.

  Apart from this, a dull, dull, boring to the bone script, a depressing viaual color scheme, a movie without a finale.

  i thought it was a "cool" movie. Star war type of thing. Interesting story. The plot can be confusing, but once you see what's going on, it's not that bad. It also raised interesting questions too; some may consider cheesy, but i think they're interesting questions nevertheless.

  100 Million dollars for Wilder Penfield, "Brain-in-Vats", video game wet dream, cybersludge, without the thought, garbage. A friend said it is the best, and most important, sci-fi movie ever. Music was damn irritating too. But hey, I just saw Millenium and I think it is the better movie so what do I know.

  I get dizzy thinking about all these FX movies that never seem to bother with concepts of "plot" or "story". Let's not even get into "characters" or "acting".

  Be that as it may, the first (!) DVD I bought to show off my new DVD player was....dum dum DUM! The Matrix.

  Well I thought the basic concept was great but as usual in Hollywood the special effects seized control and the plot became of secondary importance. With no story to ride heard on the computer jockeys they usually manage to run the effects into the ground also.

  You'd think with a 100 million dollars and a couple years of pre production,production and post production they'd at least be able to get a *ucking story made without leaving gaping holes in the plot. Its OK to make an audience wonder what a character is thinking but not to leave them wondering "what the *uck did I miss ?"

    Clark, you and I definitely don't agree on our politics, but I wholeheartedly agree with you on the Matrix and Brazil. They were both horrible movies, or they went totally over my head. Here's another, The Fifth Element. From the broad that talks like some refugee from Endor, to Gary Oldham's performance as the bad guy (hey, dig that crazy hairdo) I just thought it was trash.

      If all you care about is plot or cahracter development, please stop watching films and start reading novels. Though a truly terrific film can do it all, you cannot expect 100 minutes of text to be fully developed.
      You all seem to be ignoring the cinematic and visual experience of the movies.
      To pan The Fifth Element or the MAtrix for lack of plot, and not to recognize the visual artistry is to forget the very medium you are evaluating.

      The very number of films appearing since the Matrix, using similar action sequence techniques, should be testament to some of the nicer features of the film. Is there any greater form of industry or popular recognition of quality than imitation?

      You certiainly are entitled to your opinions, but they smack of "film snobbery" to me.

        I just look for more than wiz-bang special effects. Ya gotta have a plot, characters that you can connect with, (be they good or evil), and some sort of resolution. Some films get so convoluted in their attempt to do one of the above, or they replace their ability to do one of the above with special effects, that the film falls down and fails to deliver. This is not to say that you can't be satisfied with plot and character development failures, only that those films aren't for me. I wish I liked "The Matrix" and "The Fifth Element".

          I posit The Matrix is even more important sociologically and spiritually than Star Wars It simply is more than the Star Wars of this generation.
