Slow moving story about the men who created the CIA. Or was it about Skull & Bones? Angelina Jolie, in the usually cliched role of the forgotten wife, was the only standout. The film was far too ambitious in trying to cover a complex story and even more complex characters, so it did it the only way it could, shallowly. Hollywood seems to have lost the skill base for telling this kind of story efficiently and believably in two hours. It appears to me that what probably began as flashbacks became the body of the story/film. The 2-1/2 hours got to be very tedious. The violent scenes seemed to me to be tacked-on afterthoughts, and the ending seemed contrived and didn't fit well.

Follow Ups:
I could barely make it thru the 2 1/2 hours but in the end enjoyed it. The movie seemed heartless - like the Damon character. But the pace does pick up and a few things happen, they piece together some film and sound bits (a little like in the Conversation) they interrogate a suspect, Damon's son grows up and Damon's lifestyle has consequences on him. Overall a decent effort but I would not wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone, I would warn them first.
BTW I think Angelina Jolie has the temperment to play Damon's wife but it is hard to see how he could ignore the rest of her...

The second time i saw it it seemed to go much faster.
Odd.

...praised by reviewers.I thought it was pretty enjoyable and well done although I agree it was slow moving and more subtle than my usual fare.

I was not overwhelmed by this film when I saw it for the first time, but curiously I went again a few weeks later having actually forgotten I had seen it and found it ten times as enjoyable.
