Did anyone see "The Cranes Are Flying" on TCM Wednesday evening?
Wow, is all I can say! What a masterpiece. A compelling, tragic narrative on love and war in the USSR at the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War. This gem had superb performances, wonderful b&w photograpy, and sure handed direction. The lead actress was a harbinger of Anna Karina. It's available as a Criterion dvd which I will pick-up immediately.

I just wonder if it looks dated to a modern Western viewer - based on your reaction, apparently not.The lead guy is a wonderful actor who left great heritage. You would be well advised to seek his "The Lady with the Dog" based on famous Chechov's novel.
If you liked the Cranes, you MUST also look at "Ballad of a Soldier" could be called its sister film.

I haven't seen it in ages, so can't comment... must have seen it fifty times or so, though... it was the standard Soviet propaganda fare.

I recently saw Road to Koktebel and Ivan I and II: see below for my comments.
(Hope all's well with you).
I will read those again a bit later...

Agreed --- they are very much alike, sort of a balanced male/female-based perspective between the two.

I have the Criterion, highly recommended...Missed the TCM showing, but I did catch Mr. Arkadin on TCM earlier in the week, however. Love that channel...
