I was discussing this topic with a freind, and we were saying that many people purchase DVD for better pic quality, but still only hook it up to their stereo TV or to their stereo reciever. Wondering if a survey was ever done on this, and if not, what percentage would you say do DVD in 2-channel?
Follow Ups:
My DVD player is just plugged into a stereo television, but for the majority of the films that I watch even this is overkill. After all, most classic cinema films are in mono.

In my household, it is 50%! (One with surround sound and one without)
2nd system is for 2-channel music, ballgames and kiddie DVDs for my toddler . . .

That would help explain the popularity of those crappy "Home theater in a box" systems. Most receivers sold from the mid to late 90s were at least Dolby Pro Logic. I would guess the 20% would be mostly a) the hard-core audiophiles who don't want to mar their precious two-channel systems or b) people upgrading from VCRs who don't have the money to buy a 5.1 system -- yet . . .

I would set up a 5-7.1 HT system in a heartbeat were it up to me...

There are some decent smaller speakers and even in-walls that might meet the WAF factor. I'm pretty impressed with the decent (no, NOT audiophile quality and no, NOT spectacular, but decent) sound I'm getting from a pair of Cambridge Soundworks AM62's, picked up on eBay for about ninety bucks including shipping. These have a 6.5" woofer and aimable silk-dome tweeter; there are also model with a 5" and 8" woofers. Might be worth thinking about . . .
