I know this is one of those idiot questions but I have to ask.. After reading about so many DVD players and chip sets and DACs and so on... which new generation player gives the best non-progressive scan picture quality? I am not interested in SACD or DVD-Audio as I would purchase a separate player for this. Thanks in advance for your opinions!

I needed to know the same thing for around $300. I did alot of research on the web and read alot of reviews. It seemed for the money the Toshiba models were the best out there. I dont know if there is a special high end off market brand in that price range. Like Marantz.
I bought the Toshiba and it blew away my 2 yr old Sony away in ever aspect

Which Tos' unit are your referring to? I believe most of the current toshiba models all suffer from the chroma upsampling error.

I finally broke down and bought a JVC XV-S500BK. My main criteria was progressive scan even though I don't have that kind of TV yet and the ability to play CD-Rs, RWs and mp3 for a party that we hosted. It's worked flawlessly. Surprisingly, mp3 at 192 or better are at least as good as the radio and some are near CD quality.Picture quality and sound are excellent. And it remembers settings unlike an older Sony that I had some time ago, so you just drop in a DVD and press play.
It'd be hard to pay $500. Very few or the better models are over $150.
Plugged into my DAC, this cheap JVC even makes for a decent transport. Go figure.
