Thinking about getting an AVR with a DVD player. Based on limited discussions with dealers , I get the impression that SonyES, Denon and Rotel could deliver respectable product s within this budget. This sys would be separate from my 2 channel sys.
Follow Ups:
Hard to go wrong, especially if you shop the web for best price on the ES line. Get a combo SACD DVD player to go with it, or a DVD Audio player, and you are ready to rock. JBL speakers have great buys, if you shop the web, you will not find a better speaker for the $$$ than their S line, as long as you shop the web for best price. Do NOT buy their H or N line, they OK but not suitable for your higher end $$$.

Assuming that you will also need a 5.1 speakers for your HT set-up, here is a system that falls right at your $3K limit:Denon AVR 3802 @$999.00 list
Denon DVD 1600 @$549.00 list
Axiom Epic Grand Master Home Theater @$1510With some shopping the Denon equipment should be available for less than list.

You don't mention your speakers or monitor, but here's a system that would come in right around $1K: Outlaw Audio 1050 A/V receiver and Panasonic RP-91 DVD. The Panny is being replaced by a new unit that might be a bit better, but these two pieces of gear are excellent for the money. You could spend 3x the cash to obtain only nominal improvement.
