hi everyone, looking for surround preamp recommendations under $2k, but the market seems to be concentrated at the higher price points. right now i'm looking at the Rotel 1066. any other suggestions? i'm just looking for basic DD/DTS, nothing too fancy... preferrably with good quality analog pass-thru as well (for SACD).
Follow Ups:
You might look at the B&K AVR 305. They just came out with the new model, (the 507), and there should be good discounts on the 305. I just got one for $2200, so it's in the ballpark.
hi garth, thanks for the tip, it sounds like a good mid-price option but a little more than i want to spend. i wound up getting a mint used Rotel RSP-966 for $699. it doesn't have DTS EX or Pro Logic II but is otherwise pretty similar to the 1066. i was actually really really disappointed with it when i first got it - poor circuit layout, unspectacular decoding quality, mediocre analog preamp performance, annoying user interface - but after learning to live with its compromises and adjust to the sound quality a little it's proven to be satisfactory. it still falls short of what i was expecting but for under $1k i don't think i really had too many choices. it probably still sounds better than the decoder/preamp sections of most receivers at any rate.
i made up my own system type of set-up using the rotel 985 processor and i'm very satisfied with it. i don't know how it compares to other systems that people have, but now that i have a 64 inch hdtv to accompany the sound, i don't know if there are too many better systems out there.and i really do love the whole home theater thing.
it's really fantrastic to rent dvd for 2 bucks and have an amazing audio/visual xperience.i'm a rotel preamp, processor and cd player fan. they have great values in these areas of equipment. if something else claims to be better, i won't consider it unless i do an a/b with the rotel, cause the rotel is likely to be better.
the rotel is a great processor, and it's also excellent for stereo sound.
