The picture on my Panasonic Tau is excellent except for the geometry which causes vertical lines to become somewhat distorted as they approach either side of the tube. The dealer says that all $500 tv's have this type of problem and that I would need to go to an HD set (which I can't afford at this time) to avoid it. Any suggestions for dealing with the problem. I've heard that some internal shielding may help, but where would one place it? Is it possible that the speakers are influencing the picture by their proximity to the edge?thanks,

Thanks. I was referring to the built in speakers, which are at either side of the screen. I wonder if the internal shielding is sufficient.
...move them further away! : )

What rubbish. Geometry is an issue with many sets, especially flat screens - makes no difference if they're $500 analog (non-HD) sets or $2200 Sony XBR HD Wegas. It's hard to get good geometry on CRT direct views and the cool looking flat screens are particularly vulnerable to this.Sounds like you're describing "pincushion". I don't know how user-friendly the Panansonic's menu is, but some sets do provide user adjustments to correct pincushion and other geometry issues. Your set *may* not, and it may be necessary to get into the service menu. It's probably not cost effective to have this TV professionally calibrated, but you could pick up the AVIA, Video Essentials or Sound & Vision HT DVDs, pop one into your player, and I guarantee your Tau will look much better when you're done tweaking.
Strongly suggest, for specific geometry query, you take your question to the Panasonic forum at hometheaterspot.com, and/or the direct view forum at avsforum.com.
