Are there any performance or quality discriminators left in the retail VCR market, or are they all cheap disposables now?

Follow Ups:
Some of the Sonys have 60sec flash rewind. But other than that, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. If you're concerned about VHS quality, and you have 100's of tapes you don't want to have to re-buy in DVD, you might spring for one of the JVC SVHS units. The discontinued 9600 series or one of the pro decks built on the same platform. Except to pay $500 (+/-$250). :-( Depends on what it is worth to you.... For most, it isn't. :-/FYI - the later models 9700, 9800, 9900, etc are a notch down in build quality. not sure of playback suffers (I'm assuing it does).

I was going to get my expensive one fixed, but bought a $80 Tosiba 4 head machine instead at Costco. The silly thing has a great picture and works flawlessly.

I don't know about the SuperVHS machines, but for $100 for a complex tape machine most likely means use it until it breaks and then toss it.
