  What I'm seeking to determine is whether you are always guaranteed to get a "reasonable" and usable signal from the DVD players analog stereo outputs regardless of what kind of disc is being played.

  If this is the case then one can enjoy DVD movies in stereo while getting all the necessary audio information, albeit without the surround sound.

    There should be a setting for stereo/2-channel via the DVD player's set-up. Obviously you won't get the full effect of multi-channel but it should be ok for casual viewing.

      By doing some sort of ( Surround L + Surround R ) / 2 and placing it in the L & R channel, with one of the signal's phase inverted. This way, the information could be extracted by DPL processors.

      I presume they are already doing it for the center channel, or else dialogue would never be present in DD/DTS 5.1 via analog 2ch output.

        ...depending on the source material. It can synthesize som ambient information from stereo recordings and create an ersatz surround sound. The Dolby website has lots of info, much of it over my head. Here's the link:

  Well, you get two channel stereo and Pro-logic with the analogue connection. In order to get digital or DTS, you need an optical "out" from the DVD player and of course optical "in" on the receiver or pre-amp.
