You can't afford to save that much ...Be careful not to substitute quality for savings. I'd recommend 32" that is 16:9 ready, but not 16:9 widescreen. Widescreen will cost you more and 99% of current content will be distorted.
My choice from most to least expensive in this category is:
Sony
Toshiba
SamsungI've just gone through this comparison shopping ordeal and I ended up with the Sony. Also keep in mind that there can be considerable variance between dealers. good luck!

go with toshiba's 32hfx72, great looking tv set that goes for bout 1200, alot cheaper than sony, and still great quality.

Samsung has a 30inch (16:9) HDTV monitor around $1k USD. Unforunately it doesn't have as many inputs as some of its competitors do. :-( Personally I'd try to get a 16:9 set, as 16:9 and HDTV seem to be the future. Although 4:3 sets (SDTV and HDTV) are less expensive, and more tempting.Last time I shopped (summer 2002) it seemed that Sony, JVC and Toshiba had higher pricing, and Philips and Panasonic were generally a little lower. But YMMV.
