  Yamaha HTR-5450 Receiver 55 watts per channel, lots of surround options $175.00 close out at local electronics store

  Total includinfg shipping: about $700.00

  This system is definately not optimized for two chanel audio, but deffinitely kicks a$$ as a home theater in my midsize living room.

  Spend the rest on a few calssics you can watch over and over.

  It's not for everyone but I love it.

  When the kids are ogne I'll devote the time and money to a high-end 2 chanel system.

  I would recommend spending about 60% of your budget on an A/V receiver and 40% on 2 bookshelf speakers for now(since they would definitely sound better than floorstanding for the price and you could always move them to the rear in a HT system when the time/money comes for the rest of the speakers).

  My preference for a package in this price range would be:

  Paradigm Cinema system (two pair of satellites, center channel and powered subwoofer), priced at about $700.00

  Inexpensive A/V receiver like the Pioneer VSXD-811S for about $300.00.

  This system will be fine in a small to medium size room, but you may need to spend more if you want acceptable performance in a larger room.

  -JBL NSP-1 (about $300 street)
  -Dayton 10" subwoofer from partsexpress.com (about $125 delivered)
  -Outlaw Audio receiver (about $550 delivered) -- www.outlawaudio.com

  ... leaving you $75 for speaker wire & interconnects. The receiver's quality far outstrips those of the speakers, but you could keep the surrounds & upgrade the mains later.

  One of the cool things about the JBLs is that mounting brackets are integral, making installation a snap.

      I would definitely recommend the Outlaw Receiver which you can purchase for less if you don't mind a "B" unit from Outlaw Audio. Any of the speaker recommendations mentioned by the other posts are also very good for the money.
