I read where the subwoofer gets "dropped" if you play music in "direct mode" with the latest Onkyo A/V receivers. Is this true and if so, does this mean that the sub does not operate when using this function? Thanks for the help.
Follow Ups:
Analog bypass/analog direct mode allows an analog signal from a 2-channel analog source and signals from an SACD or DVD-A player to bypass the A/D and D/A conversion. This means that the signal will only be played through the front left and right channels. This is not only with Onkyo. Many receivers feature the Analog bypass/analog direct mode. If however, you engage bass management on your A/V receiver, the bypass mode will convert the analog signal to digital, since bass management is performed by the DSP chips.

I have the Onkyo TX-DS696.
In direct mode there is only output to the two front channels, not the Sub.
Use stereo and you will get L/R and Sub out.

I don't know about the Onkyo, but John C. is not totally correct. Although what you read would suggest that the subwoofer output is dropped in direct mode, meaning your sub would not receive a signal, my experience differs. My Pioneer Elite VSX-24TX (an older model) does continue to output to the subwoofer via the RCA subwoofer line out jack in "direct" mode in stereo. I lose the ability to make level adjustments to the subwoofer output in direct mode, but the overall volume control does keep the *relative* level of the sub and main speakers constant. IOW, if I raise or lower the main volume, the sub level with rise or fall by the same amount.I am not certain the current Elite receivers operate this way. In fact, the owner's manual to my receiver would make one think that it cuts the sub out in "direct" analog mode. In fact, as long as the front L/R speakers are set to "small", the subwoofer output remains active. Perhaps this means the crossovers in the Elite are electronic, and not digital, or perhaps my "direct" analog mode isn't so direct. However, if a receiver has digital crossovers for the sub output, and the "direct" mode is truly pure anaolg, it will probably shut the subwoofer output off in the direct mode.
If you're set on the Onkyo, buy it where you can return it in case it does not provide a signal for the sub when in direct mode.

Sorry to be so dense on this one but does this mean that if I have a sub that I would like to use for both a two channel (i.e. stereo) system and for a 5.1 set-up, in direct mode the sub will be bypassed? In otherwords if I use a sub with my two channel system, will it not work with the A/V receiver running in direct mode? The reason I'm asking is that the satellite/sub 5.1 system I am thinking about buying is quite small, so without the sub working in two channel mode the sound would be extremely bass shy. I hope this makes sense.
