My 4 year old JVC doesn't play certain DVD's due to format, so I need to buy another. Any recommendations in the $300 - $500 range? I hear a lot about the Panasonic XP 30 and XP50, and Denon. I don't know much about this stuff, and any help would be appreciated. The XP50 is about impossible to find. I don't watch a lot of DVD, but want something that will play DVD's that I create on my computer in the DVD-R format. I also have a high end sound system. Thanks for your help.

I picked up a Denon 1600 for $400. It is incredible!!! It also is one of the most reliable players available. For a real understanding of Progressive Scan and a great benchmark of 100's of players go to:www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi
You'll see that the Denon is at the top of the list and uses the highly regarded Genesis FLI2200 chip.
Just watched my first movie on my new Panny xp-30 progressive into a 32" digital-ready HD panasonic. VERY impressive. I had bought Ice Age from a video store and neither my Sony 7000 or Pioneer 525 would read it, but the Panny came through with flying colors. Used the analog outputs into a Ymaha 2092 and was also impressed with the sound for an inexpensive DVD. If you can find one, get it.
Go for the Panasonic RP-91...best bang for the buck in this price range...I heard they are now kinda hard to find. I have the RP-91N in champagne color...it has all the bells and whistles of some more expensive models at a reasonable price, the performance is amazing. Check it out on Panasonics website and look for great reviews at the link below. Hope this helps...Rob
I think the Panasonics offer the best compatibility with DVD-R. Toshiba also makes some players that will play back DVD-Rs, I think.
