I just purchased a Sony STR-4ES A/V receiver. It is not, nor is any Sony that I am aware of THX certified. I have a 4 channel THX certified amp already. If I use the THX certified amp and run it through the Sony receiver for the front and rears. Will the audio that comes thru the fronts and rears be THX certified audio? Or, is it impossible to do? Thanks........

There are a number of components to THX certification. One is the THX equalization. That's the most important, but a non-THX receiver might have a different name for a similar equalization feature (like cinema equalization).Other parts of THX, THX Ultra, and THX Ultra2 certification apply to features like bass management, time delay and speaker volume options, and appropriate levels of amplifier power. It can also apply to 7.1 capabilities.
By having the certification, you are assured that all these features are available, but the manufacturer pays quite a bit of royalty for the "name" THX. Your receiver may have most of the necessary features. By adding outboard amplifiers, you will likely improve your sound. You just need to do a bit of research to figure out if your receiver does everything you want it to. If it does, then you are fine!! I'll bet your outboard amplifiers aren't THX certified, but that's likely because they don't have a 12V trigger to turn them on and off via the receiver. Who cares -- it just means you use up a bit more power by keeping them on.
THX is not a process or a 'sound' it is simply a marketing ploy that manufacturers have to buy into in order for it to get "THX" certification logo. It's is supposed to be able to make it easy for a consumer to find all the necessary pieces of equipment and match them together. If you have all THX certified components, you are getting the best possible sound....... BS!
Don't be missled by the BS, if you are using quality equipment, THAT is what matters.
Thanks for your responses. My outboard amp is THX certified. It's a Madrigal Citation 4 channel at 150 wpc. The A/V receiver is a Sony 110 watts times 7. It is not THX certified. If I use the Citation amp, which is certified THX, into the Sony. It will be like a preamp. Will the audio coming out of the receiver, pass through THX audio from the Citation? This is what I want to know. Will I notice any difference in sound using the Citation 150 wpc thru the surrounds over using the 110 wpc Sony thru the surrounds? Does this make any sense? Cuz I'm getting confused writing this.

I have found that the higher-end Sony Receivers (ES) make pretty descent preamps with some minor tweaking.... one thing is for sure, using the external MAdrigal to drive as many speakers as you can WILL sound way better than using the internal amps....THX or not....You know i would take a slightly different approach, i would use the Madrigal for your front L/R channels and Center and use the Internal amps for the L/R back surrounds. This would sound much better for voices and music and let the receiver handle the surrounds (which is less demanding). Remember THX is NOT a format, it's a standard, so you won't loose anything doing it either the way you thought or what i suggested.
I have a Sony receiver acting as a pre for my PSAudio HCA-2 amp for music and front L/R amplification. I let the receiver handle the center and surrounds and pre-out to my Titan II LE Sub. Having your best amp handle you front L/R channels really makes sense if you also listen to music.... my setup is now sounding very nice.
if all you are going for is the THX certification of your SYSTEM, then using any NON-THX certified components (cables, components, speakers, etc..) ain't gonna get you there....THX <> Holy Grail
(oh, in Audio, there IS no Holy Grail)
