Hi guys,I have a technical question for which I can't find an answer. Please help if your can. I'm looking at buying a Philips 60" Widescreen rear projection TV (the 60PP9502 to be exact) but it only displays 480p and 1080i not 720p.
My question is how does it convert a 720p signal? Up to 1080i or down to 480p? If it's up to 1080i as I suspect wouldn't I see massive artifacting?
The TV comes with what I fear may be a Philips exclusive feature which allows you to manually switch between the interlaced signal and the progressive signal. Can anyone tell me if this feature is available from other manufacturers?
Follow Ups:
The Sony's base resolution is 1366x768 P, so everything has to go through some type of conversion. Where the conversion in these HDTV ready sets used to be the weak link, the weak link is no more. In my Sony, the 480i looks really good (obviously not as good as 720P or 1080i). And Yes, I use the wide mode to stretch 480i TV to fill the screen. The moral to this story is to go look at the set you are interested in, with all of the different inputs. They have made much progress in internal scalers. You may be pleasntly surprised.
