Greetings,I will be adding a sub woofer on my ht this Christmas. My questions are:
1) What is better ported or closed box sub.
2) 1 big honking sub with lots of power or 2 small ones about 150 watts or more each?
The brands I am looking at are B&W ASW600 & 650 (10 & 12 inch woofer), PSB, Velodyne, HSU and others. I will be matching them with the B&W LCR 600 center, B&W 602S3 for L&R, and B&W Leisure Monitor for surround. Please advice me on my best options. My budget is limited to 1000.00 and 1200.00 maximum.
Follow Ups:
I listened to a demo of the B&W ASW675. It definitely added nice heft in the bass, and it had no trouble keeping up in a $40,000 system (Mark Levinson & Avalon). I would think the 600 or 650 would be great for your system, but do have a listen first.Regarding closed vs. ported boxes, given a choice I prefer a sealed system, but that parameter alone does not determine ultimate quality between competing designs.

For various reasons, you might want to stick with the same brand. Sometimes the "house sound" can also be applied to subs, and they were most likely tested with models they already own.For the most part, though, subs are really room dependent. Really. Getting a demo unit to try it out would be the best bet, but probably not an option. You might ask...

Thanks for the advice. I will definitely listen to a ported and closed box sub and see which sounds better for me. I will try to set up my HT with one sub first. If I can't get it right then will do a 2 sub set-up. My room and HT is set-up kind of awkward. I have it in the basement (450 sq.ft but I am only using half of it for my HT. Since the other half have post or foundation in it. So, it's empty and the only furniture I have is a medium size velvet sofa and a rug on the floor. Hopefully, everything will work okay.

For $399 plus delivery, I think you'll find it difficult to find a better sub that will provide tight, taut, quick bass for music and enough rumble to satisfy 80-90% of HT owners out there.Mine is in a 24x17x8 room and shakes the walls, rattles the windows and vibrates my RPTV cabinet.

I love my M&K MX125, and I have B&W 602 mains, CC6, 601 rears. I got mine for $699 plus tax but that was a once in a lifetime deal my dealer gave me. They retail at 1199 I think.

I'd opt fr the two small ones as if properly placed they can generally provide smoother overall room response. I don't think that a particular design has it over the other; it's the execution that counts. In a ported model, however, there is more likelihood of "one note bass".
