Looking for a front projector. Borrowed one from work, a LCD Emerson that we use for Power Point presentations. I was suprised by how good it looked. The fan noise bothersome though.
Been doing some reading and it looks the Sony VPL-HS10 or 20 might be the way to go but it also sounds like the DLP's have some advatages, better black levels ets.
I don't want to spend a lot, maybe $3000-3500 at the most. It would only be used a couple times a week, at the most to watch DVD's. Any suggestions?

Please consider CRT PJ if possible. On ebay see uniits by avtechnician , very reliable and service. Go to avs forums to see many discussions about CRT/LCD/DLP/DILA/LCOS PJs.

It's a matter of preference... and perhaps physiology. LCD is often criticized for screen door effect, but DLP is very often criticized because it causes some people to see rainbows. This is apparently based on how our eyes work and some people don't see them... but for those that do, it's supposed to be very distracting.I'd suggest going over to www.avsforum.com to read the display devices section. Check out front projection under $3500 and read away. A few projectors are noted as being very strong performers - the Sanyo PLV-Z2 is a 16:9 LCD that people are raving about. The Infocus X1 (recommended by jaroslaw bulnowski as well) is a good 4:3 DLP projector that a lot of people brag about. This really isn't the best forum for video, so check them out. Then come back here for audio info!

I understand these technologies are changing VERY rapidly so my advice would be to wait a couple of months if you can. A dealer indicated to me that big improvements are iminent. Not being in the market for a new projector myself, I did not press him for details but some careful research could pay you dividends. Try some other forums to see what rumours are floating around. However, it is like waiting fot a "better" computer. One could wait forever as advances were made almost daily. But computer improvements seem to be more settled down at the moment as the market is becoming saturated. It will be awhile before this happens with projectors.
Let us know if you stumble upon anything interesting.
