Video Asylum

I recently moved and my only choice for HDTV signals was Dishnet. No Xoom, no HDTV via cable.

Having been an audiovisual asylum inmate for some time now, I had some trepidation, but aside from a few glitches -- had to cut down some limbs in the way, one day the box had to be physically unplugged before it "rebooted" itself -- I've been pretty pleased.

As some critics have pointed out, there isn't much HDTV programming. Yet! But just in the last couple of weeks, both ESPN and TNT have been showing the NBA playoffs in hi-def and the difference is quite dramatic. The wider screen size allows the camerapeople to show more of the action without "swinging" the cameras around so much, and the colors are so much more lifelike while the realism is much improved.

So far I'm relatively happy, and I know that much, much more hi-def programming is on its way now that America is close to achieving, if it hasn't already, critical mass when it comes to the % of hi-def sets in people's homes and the groundswell of demand for such programming.

Just my 2 cents for today.
