4:3 Letterbox or 4:3 PanScan?

You are supposed to set your DVD player to either of these 2 modes (as opposed to 16:9) when you are using a 4:3 TV, right? So which of these 2 settings should I set to and what's the difference between them? Any picture distortion watching DVD films with letterbox format if I leave the setting on PanScan permanently?

I would set it to letterbox.

  It seems to get the aspect ratio right for every DVD. Letterbox doesn't for some movies - like 12 Monkeys. Anybody knows why and can point me to a source for such information?
