I'm not the least bit versed in the 'home theater' thing, so excuse the novice question, but what's the logic behind the different 'regions' of DVD disks and players?

There is no "logic" behind it, not any logic that benefits the consumer/user anyway.The regions are mandated by the DVD consortium (money-grubbing-profiteering-no-fun-industry-types).
They just don't want someone from Japan watching a USA-released DVD before that movie is released in Japan, to avoid losing profit.
Lucky for us, there are a bunch of DVD players that are easily hacked to be "region-free." I just hacked my Zenith DVB318 and watching many Asian movies no problem.
