I have a 6 year old Mitsubishi 48" rear projection TV. No progressive scan. Colors good, picture faia but the dot crawl is awful, especially on DVD. Also, I may have see for the first tiem the chroma bug, in a TV show last night, guy holding a red object moved it rapidly, adn it changed size and went out of focus. Not the ame as the chroma bug, but...
Also, the detail such as faces in a crwod are just mush.Does my TV deed adjustment. Would a progressive scan YV improve or fix this? Does HDTV fix this? Is my TV obsolete?
The Samsung with DLP has one heck of a picture. And the 50" is on the web at $2550 delivered!!!

Have you calibrated your set? It makes a world of difference!Calibration is relatively easy to perform with Digital Video Easentials which you can pick up for approx. 15 bucks. I found the best price at deepdiscountdvd.com. Go straight to chaper 7 and invest 35-45 minutes of you time. Whatever TV you end up using, this DVD is an essential must have tool.
A quality DVD player is also a worth while investment but the real jump in PQ will be with a quality progressive scan capable set. BTW, there is no need to spend much and there are lots of suggestions at the AVS Forum.
An inexpensive tweak that has helped my PQ in no small way was to replace all the cheap power cords with shielded Voltex 18 awg. This includes the HD cable box, DVD player and screen, Sharp 37" LCD. You may require to pick up IEC adapters to do this.

After a few hours watching many hours of TV feeds in 3 different stores I purchased an old fashioned CRT.SONY KV34XBR910
I felt the CRTs did blacks better, which to me showed more dimensions. Biggest problem with rear projections CRTs (like my Pioneer) is the burn-in issue. If you watch a lot of 4:3 material, and don't care for the stretch modes, go for the other digital technologies. Doesn't matter to the tube sets like the Sony.

When I first saw the Sammy I wanted one, badly. I did see the
rainbow effect but thought it might have been on the program material. I thought I saw the picture change in focus also.
But! The Picture! So bright, so bold, I thought it was stunning.
Then I went to avsforums and started to reseach this set. I learned that i wasn't the only one seeing those problems either. I spent
a few weeks and many hours at a number of stores looking, watching.
After a while I couldn't that those defects. I DID NOT want another SONY product for anything. No how, no way. I then spent time looking at LCD's, and plasma TV's. Again they were stunning. Until I spent enough time looking at them and reading about their problems also.
The deal killer was after I had PC Richards hookup the cable feed from the SONY direct views to both the plasma and the DLP. Then there stunning picture just vanished. They all use a speacial feed for those other sets to make them look better then the DV's. Another thing with non DV's. They have problems with fast moving scenes. I like auto, motorcycle racing.Their not the best for that.
Again I wanted no part of another SONY, 201 lb's of TV as apposed to 70 lb DLP's but I bought one anyway. Very gald I did. I have been reading that the latest Samsung DLP's aren't gathering much respect. I've read that some who upgraded to the latest version have gone back to the last revision.
To make my life easier with the 201 lb SONY I put 14 2" ball casters
on the bottom of the stand. Makes things a lot easier to move around.
Besides DLP's and Plasma's make heat, and fan noise.
Lot of false info out there. I had two Samsung HLN5065s die, but did get to watch the Hocky playoffs and some CART racing in HD. Awesome, fantanstic, no motion problems?I now own a 60" Sony GWIII ( I hate Sony also) Today is day four and NO problems, must get off my as- once in a while to see if fan is operating.
Did a wee bit of tweaking using DVI-D, then watched Discovery HD showing the Blue Angels and then The Boston Pop's Fireworks. Wife and I agree, a jaw dropping experience.
You can even get a bulb replacement for the Sony, Samsung's are not available, even to the repair techs.
If the Sony bites the dust in the near future, we will probaly downsize to a DV and be done with it.
