I'm looking for an inexpensive basic DVD recorder that will allow me to take the iLink (IEEE 1394) output from my Canon mini DV camcorder and transfer the video digitally to be recorded onto DVD. The DVD will need to play in most home DVD players. What are my options? I don't need built-in hard disk or fancy time-shift recording capabilty.... just want a basic (cheap) way to transfer mini DV tape to DVD - NOT using a PC - but a dedicated consumer electronics DVD recorder 'appliance'. Thanks!

I had no idea the prices have come down so low for a basic DVD recorder. For under $200, if it does the job, thats all I care about. Isn't this a wonderful time to be alive if you're a gadget junkie? ;-)

It's $149, records on DVD+R/+RW discs, a 4-pin DV input on the front panel and has some other features that you may or may not need. If you don't like it, Wal-Mart is pretty nice about returns.I picked one up the other night, but I didn't have a 4-pin to 4-pin firewire cable. I just got one (6ft cable from tigerdirect.com for $8), so I'll be trying it out soon. The Sony D8 camcorder I bought in 2000 is not a High-End model by any means, but it will allow a digital transfer through the i.link port.

I saw a Zenith DVD Recorder that does both -R/-RW and +R/+RW at my local Brandsmart store for $199. The model number was DVR413 and had the iLink you are looking for.
