Have checked the archives and the general consensus is that Component betters S-video. There are a few people out there that advise its close but in my instance I find the S-video a cleaner picture. I have a 2 year old Sony DVP-NS715P dvd player into a 3 year old Sony KP-53HS10 RPTV. S-video cable is a 3 year old Tributaries "upper model". Have been comparing Progressive scan output (480P) with Ratshack component cables to the S-video and the picture is noticeably sharper in terms of detail than the cprogressive scan output. Thought it possibly might be the lower quality RS cables so I bought a new 3m set and while they haven't burned in but 7 hours or so the same thing applies. Color seems to be deeper on component but the details (are so much sharper on the S-video. Pause a pciture and you can see the mole of someone's cheek with component but on S-video you can see the mole actually has an indentation in it. I've checked both the manual for the dvd and tv and all my hook-ups are correct. Could it be the fact that the dvd player is the weak link and that buying a new but hopefully inexpensive dvd player be the solution?

Follow Ups:
I was recently at a store where they had a 42" Panasonic ED plasma on spit-screen with a component input on one side and an S-video feed on the other. The side with the S-video feed looked awful compared to the extremely bright, colourful component side. However, I use a Tributaries S-video cable between my Pioneer 47Ai DVD player and my 27" Panasonic GAOO TV, and the picture is great. I can only conclude from this that it must have something to do with the resolution of the respective sets.

I cannot really answer your question but IMHO the TV is the weak link. A DVD player is designed to send a component video signal, the TV may not be designed to receive one in the first place. Like you, I have experienced better results with S-video rather than with Components. My DVD is a fairly recent Yamaha (1-year old), and my tv is 3-4 years old JVC 27inch. Based on my experience, your experience, and what I hear at hifi/video stores, component connection is beneficial only with large screen TVs (above 36inch) and HDTVs.
