I tried an 8 ohm center speaker and it works fine .. beat it to death with Terminator 3 last night and would not shut down.

So either the receivers you use do not like 4 ohm loads or there is something wrong with your M&K center. Either way the solution is to change speakers.
I tend not to like most receivers because the power ratings are "optimistic" and they lack the power supplies to properly drive speakers.
