My wife just gave the go-ahead for a home theater in the living room. I even talked her into getting a nice CRT projector, as long as I build a box to hide it in. Here's what I'm planning:Barco Graphics 808 or 808s projector
Draper or Elite motorized 96" screen
Some kind of receiver, probably Denon or Harman/Kardon
Magnepan MGMC1's in front, MMGC center, MMG surrounds (5.1 config)
Homebrew stereo subwoofers (Titanics or Infinity Perfect 12s)What I have:
Denon DVD-1600 and HTPC sources
160W stereo amplifier for subsLiving room: about 22' x 15', screen will be along the long wall in front of a large window.
The idea is: currently the couch is in front of the nice big window, and we stare at a wall consisting of a 32" TV and my big Magneplanar 1.4's. With a wall of equipment gone and the speakers off the floor, we'll have a lot more space, and a nice view out our front window. The Harman stuff is on the list mostly because I can get a deal on it from a guy at work. He's got a really high end Harman/Infinity setup at home and it sounds *nice*
Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would seriously consider this before you buy a new receiver. Blu-ray and HD-DVD will be out sometime next year and Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD have already been announced for them. It shouldn't be too long before we see receivers with the new decoders, so you might want to wait.
I'm not that concerned with HD-DVD or HD sound formats. The gear will be out next year, the software probably won't be plentiful for another couple years. I've got a good DVD collection as it is, and like many, I'm loathe to buy yet another round of software, AGAIN. Fortunatly I only have a handful of VHS tapes, so upgrading to DVD's was easy. I also have a handful of Laserdiscs I still play that will probably NEVER be released on DVD (The original, unmolested, THX mastered Star Wars trilogy :)So, for now, I'd rather buy a really nice, used 5.1 or first gen 7.1 receiver, especially since I'm only doing 5.1 (the rears are going behind the couch, there is no room for sides)

Aside from the HD format capable receiver, how about the TV / projector itself? HD tuners are not too expensive and over-the-air HDTV broadcasts are FREE - and incredible to watch! Far superior to any DVD you have ever seen. Of course your TV / projector will need to accommodate the HD resolution in order to benefit from the HD broadcasts. Just a thought.

The BarcoGraphics 808/808s can display any DTV/HDTV resolution, maxxing out at 1600x1200, and a horizontal maximum of 110KHz. I'm considering a HDTV tuner for my MythTV box, I've got my eye on that unit that ignores the broadcast flag...

Not that the broadcasters are using it yet (that I know of) but it would be nice to get a HD tuner that ignores the brodcast flag before it becomes an issue. What brand / models are you looking at? Not sure how my Samsung HD tuner deals with the broadcast flag.BTW, I have one of the orignal Sony DVD players with macrovision defeat by simply moving some switches inside. It works out great for copying my DVD's to VHS so I can loan the tapes out w/o fear of someone scratching my DVD. (Especially useful when loaning the videos out to kids)
