Hi guys/gals, I'll try to make this short & to the point. A friend is building a new house w/one room to be his HT room. He has asked me for help. I explained that video was not something I was an expert at, but he likes my meager set-up & is determined for me to help. Okay, his room will be 14' x 18' x 9', one 18' wall has a large window, the opposite an entrance door. A ceiling mounted projector will aim at a "drop down" or a retractable (?) screen. He wants the same brand speakers as mine (Klipsch), and wants a projector system with an HT receiver. His budget is $7 to $9K.
I tried looking on the net at projectors/screens, but geez, I'm outta my league, way too many choices and I don't have a clue about quality, value & such. The speakers & receiver, pretty straightforward (I think). Oh, he just wants 5.1, and he is having his room wired for it all. He will have a closet wired for the components. I think that's all. Sorry, I probably didn't use the correct terminology on some things, but that's pretty much it.
One more thing, should he paint the walls any particular shade or type of non-reflective color? Thanks very much in advance for any help/suggestions.

Follow Ups:
If he has good light control (darkout blinds) an X1 or similar has a fab picture. Go to www.avsforum.com for the latest and greatest. By drop down screen, if you mean manual, he can get an entire setup (X1, screen, wiring) for around $1500US. If he can't get good light control than I agree with an RPTV, a Sony is a good bet, there are plenty of options there. His receiver would be fairly easy as I think Klipcsh are a pretty easy load, yes? Maybe a NAD, Rotel, Denon....
I'd recommend he wires for 7.1 while he's in there, even if he doesn't want it ... now. He or a future house buyer may want it later. Small $ now, bigger later.
Keep the paint at satin at the most, flat is best and darker is also better (even the ceiling if he's willing).

Grant, thanks very much for taking the time to respond. The AVS forum idea was great, I have registered there and am continuing my "education".

P.S. my wife & kids are holding their collective breaths, hoping (I'm sure) Dad doesn't get into the HT upgrade like he did/does with his audio!

HT is very much fun. My room is essentially set up for music, but movies bring people in and is great entertainment. The big screen doesn't interupt the music when it's rolled up so is much better than a TV. As for upgradeitis, I do have a bit of a bug, but it still doesn't anywhere near touch the audio bug for me. My X1 is happy hanging from the ceiling with no mods. I am however eventually going to build a hush box. And, well maybe upgrade to a 96" screen instead of the 84". :)

he's much better off buying a stand-alone HD RPTV, such as one of the models in the Sony KP series. He'll get better color (including black levels), resolution, and at under two grand, a much better value, compared with just about any LCD projector in the $2000-3000 bracket. One thing to consider--even after he's found the right projector, he'll still have to drop at least a grand (probably a lot more) for a decent motorized screen, plus the monitor ceiling mount!
