Hello,I usually hang out in another forum here, but would like to get some feedback on D-VHS.
I recently got an LCD HDTV and live in the middle of nowhere with no cable or satellite subscription. We have a nice progressive scan DVD player, so we aren't suffering, but would like to fill the gap until HD DVD players have come down in price to where a regular slob like myself can afford one.
I have been thinking that it would be nice to at least have something High-Def to show off the television to friends and have as a change of pace from Netflix faire.
Are there any inmates here that have a D-VHS player? What do you say to encourage or discourage me; I figure that at about 200 bucks for a deck, it is not a ton of dough to throw down the rat hole...
Follow Ups:
Unless you plan to watch pre-recorded hi def only. The inputs for hi def are firewire, which is extensively copy protected, and not compatible with many cable boxes. They don't seem to have component input with an analog to digital hi def converter. Check to see if it has an internal hi def tuner that it can record with. Even so, you may be limited in hi def recording options.
This may be why these hi tech pieces are going for cheap, they are primarily for playback of prerecorded materials.
It may be a long run for a short slide, but not costly, the machines are in fact on sale for about $200 in some instances and are probably superior as VCR's if nothing else.

Actually, I intend to use the JVC for playback. Anything else that it can be used for is "gravy" as far as I am concerned...Thanks for the information.
Phil,The good points are that D-VHS films look a lot better than their DVD counterparts and that (as long as the show isn't protected through encryption) one can make some great HD copies of HD shows.
D-VHS won't be quite as useful once the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD fight is settled, but it still makes a great VCR.
Can you pick up HD programming through an OTA antenna?

Hi Tosh,Thanks for the post... I live about 70-100 miles (as the crow flies) from the nearest transmission site that has HD programming, so I am not too sure that it will be possible to receive any. I have plans for a 50' tower for amateur radio use anyway, so will probably attempt something once it is up. Do you know anything at all about the relative signal strengths of standard television transmissions and HDTV transmissions? Also, would sure be interested in what kind of antenna it requires. I have seen the little ones the CCity sells and it looks like it would only serve someone who lived in a big city with a really strong signal! To say the least, I live in a fringe area!!
The local cable company charges an arm and a leg for lousy signals that aren't even in stereo! I will not give them any of my money.
Actually, since my post, I have high bid on a JVC model 30000U player on ePay, so I guess my question is moot, but I can only hope that it will prove interesting and be a better source than my DVD player (Pioneer 45A).
Your comments and the ideas of any other inmates would be gratefully accepted...
