  It may be your amp. I do not know your system configuration but it is possible for a pre/pro to leave the power amp rear channel inputs open and susceptible to noise pickup.

  Tell us more about the seetup but I doubt it's the speaker cables.

  Why would the rear speakers hiss when they're NOT in use? The hiss must be coming from somewhere... maybe the power amp. What happens when you disconnect one pair of wires to one of the rear surrounds? Disconnect it from the amp end. Does the hiss go away? Are the rear surrounds 'regular' or powered speakers?

    If you have a long run, which most surround wire is, then it will act as an antenna picking up all sorts of junk. I have the same issue, although it is not objectable. I even picked up a radio station once with the system off!

      Go to a radio shack and pick up a couple of small ferrite beeds get some that are designed for use of say 5Mhz and above not below 5Mhz. Put these beads at the end of the speaker wires near the amp.
      This should absorb the RF without affecting the sound.

      My point was to determine if he has the same 'hiss' problem with the speaker cables completely disconnected from the amp. If the hiss goes away, then the chances that shielded cables might help are pretty slim.
