If I send sound from my DVD player to my plasma with Analog cables, then output using analog cables to my receiver am I getting a true surround sound like dolby 5.1? Same for my satellite reciever, it goes to my plasma with an HDMI cord, then can I output it with analog calbes and get true surround sound?? I was told that unless I carry the sound with a digital cord (Coax or OPT) I am not getting a true surround sound, is this true?

unless you have an analog output for each channel (like some DVD players do) then i will assume you are using an RCA "Pair"..... in such a case you are getting only 2 channels (L/R) and you are missing the other 3.1 (Center, Left Surround, Right Surround, Subwoofer)...Typically the hook-up you would use is a single optical or coaxial digital cable.

Just so there's no misunderstanding...When you use the L/R (aka 2-channel) analog outputs from a DVD player, you are getting a down-mixed to 2-channel version of the (usually 5.1) soundtrack. Technically, it's not the L and R channel. As such you won't actually be "...missing the other 3.1 (Center, Left Surround, Right Surround, Subwoofer)..." channels, although most down-mix programs do leave out the LFE/.1 channel.
Provided you have a DVD player that offers 5.1 analog outputs, you can verify this by connecting only the L and R analog outputs of the 5.1 section of the DVD player to an input on your receiver and connecting the L and R analog outputs of the 2-channel section to another input on your receiver. Play a DVD with a 5.1 soundtrack and you'll immediately hear the difference when you switch the receiver between the two inputs.

I was wondering the same thing (just got a DD/DTS preamp on Friday). Thinking: Hmm, this desn't sound any different than ProLogic. Kinda thought it may be the cable, will pick one up after work. Thanks for your answer to his question. :)
