Has anyone tried using Quad ESLs (63, or even the newer 988s and 989s) in an HT setup? What are your experiences? Can they handle the sound pressure lebvels of Home Theatre action scenes (gunfire explosions etc.). Do you decide to go without a centre channel? What do you use for rears/surrounds? Please advise.

With an active xover above 80hz, and you wont have any problems...As for center speaker, it will be difficult to match your Quads, so sit on the sweet spot...

I use a pair of Jordan driver speakers for my HT.
This way I can enjoy all the excitement without blowing out my ears. You can too.
My main concern is that dynamic range of HT. Specifically, if the volume level happens to be set at something most would consider reasonable for a regular conversational section, can the quads handle the sudden, extreme, and unforseen peaks in volume level that come from gunfire and explosions etc. that are fairly common in today's movies?
