Hi,I'm finishing up my home theater room and would like to put up a projector with something like a Stewart 100" to 110" screen. The expensive part is the projector. In all honesty it seems like I need to settle for something like the $3,500 Sony LCD, but I want to know what I'd be missing by not going up to the $12,000 area DLPs like the Barco Cineversum 70 or the Sim2 HT-300. The will both do HD, so what does spending an extra $8,500 get me? I will use it 50/50 for movies and sports in HD.
Thanks,

I've got a sharp z10000 (the latest is the z12000) and the difference between this a a cheaper lcd is very significant. Colors are brighter, image sharper, more depth and dimensionality. On a good dlp, you won't notice moire effects much (if at all) and pixelation isn't an issue. Personally, I don't even like high-end LCD's because of the pixel structure problem and I find the DLP's to be a much smoother picture (and more "film-like"). Especially if you are trying to run a large screen such as a 100-110, I'd go with more firepower. Don't get cheap on the projector because this is what you are going to be watching after all.By the way, I'd look at the sharp and the marantz models and make sure to get at least the second generation dlp chip if not the latest -- it provides for blacker blacks.
Now if you want a pain in the butt with an INCREDIBLE picture, pick up a cheap 8" Sony crt projector (G70) or 9" for roughly the same money you are talking about for the lcd (G70's go for about $5K) or dlp (G90's go for about 10K). I have a G70 in my main HTR (8' screen) and it just can't be beaten by even a good dlp. Yes, the crt's are big, cumbersome and a pain to set up, but the picture is still the best out there if you can control ambient light.
I have personally found the D-ILA projectors to be the best of the digital lot. Pricey (very pricey) but true colors and the least inter-pixel gap (pixelation). As for CRTs, they are a true PITA but the later units that were liquid cooled with "automatic" adjustment are amazing, lost cause though they have become.
I have a friend with a Zenith 900. I go to his place occasionally to view a movie. It makes my digital set-up look very artificial.
But, I have HT setup for much less money and no fuss. And as my prime passion is music (particularly analogue classical music) I already have one passion that is a true PITA. And one is enough.
BTW, with a good player, Laserdiscs look much better on a CRT than on a digital projector, so if someone still has a large Laser collection, CRTs (either front view or projector) are worth a look. Unfortunately, artifacts on DVD are also more obvious on CRTs, so . . . TINSTAFL applies.
go to this link(below). Its the AVS Projector forum. I learned everything i needed to here, before I bought my PJ.good luck
