I just bougt a 5.1 Channel Receiver and am only getting stereo reception from my system. The connections to the receiver and all speakers is fine, however I suspect it is my DVD player. It is a Panasonic DVD-RP56 progressive scan player. It does not mention any ability to output 5.1 Do I have to purchase a DVD player that is compatible with 5.1 format? I'm new to this home theater stuff.

There are two things: 1) are you using a digital cable from the DVD player to the receiver?
2) Have you gone thru the menu on the DVD player & set the audio output to bitstream?
