First off, I'm not a video freak. Just want a decent tv set to watch films on cable and dvd. For instance, BJ's has one or two EDTV sets for about 1.5k. Anyone familiar with those? Any other sources?

tvauthority.comThe majority offered here are commercial models (monitors, no tuners). Most people just use their VCR and/or HD receiver to do the station "gathering". They will also need a stand or wall-mount as the prices are usually display-only. If you want a wall-mount, Sanus Systems has the VMPL and VMPL2, both of which can be found online for $125 - $100.
By the way, starting in April, Walmart will increase the number of models and step up the price competition in their plasma offerings. You can do a search at walmart.com and check out their models from Hundai (who makes the electronics, the glass is from LG). Especially interesting is the 60" model for <$7900 and 42" HD model <$2000.
There are several. Consumer Reports recently did a review of several EDTV plasma sets. They were especially impressed with a Sony model. I don't have the model number handy but someone else might. My local store didn't have that one in stock. I've seen a number of good looking 42" EDTV plasma sets for under $2.5K.I bought my LG plasma for just a hair over $2000 a couple months ago and it looks great even with HDTV source material. (I have an HDTV tuner for over the air HDTV broadcasts). Unless you're a die hard videophile, I can't see the value of spending nearly 2x for HDTV plasma vs EDTV (at this time). From 10 feet away, I could barely see the difference in picture quality between HDTV and EDTV sets side by side in the store.
but I do hear that some stores play tricks with closed circuit HDTV broadcasts. I compared two Hitachi's. Some say that one gets digital artifacts when DVD video is stepped down, - but there are DVD players that step up the resolution to HDTV. But then, I'm an IT weenie, so I see different resolutions and scan rates all of the time. :-)IMO though, there's nothing on Broadcast TV that's worth getting the stepped up HDTV resolution. This is all just a tough call....
I heard rumors of a major price drop this summer as people will start buying EDTV from Sharp at CostCo....

If the difference in picture quality is important and noticable to you by all means get the higher resolution setup. I have a High-Def Sony XBR 16:9 34" CRT set and with HD content the picture is amazing. It is in fact better than the same HD content on my 42" plasma but from a distance and to my eyes the difference isn't huge. Of course I'm comparing apples to oranges in this case with a 34" CRT vs a 42" plasma. But in terms of overall enjoyment factor (performance / price ratio) I would take the 42" EDTV plasma over the 34" HDTV CRT. If I could justify the 2x cost to step up to HD plasma I would but in my case I can't see paying the price delta.I'm not that much into video performance like I am with audio. Some people just 'enjoy the music' but I am easily annoyed by small short comings in audio gear performance. I'm not as sensitive to video as I just 'enjoy the movie' or whatever is showing.
My plan is to keep the EDTV plasma for a couple years or so as my main screen then move it to the master bedroom once I can afford a larger HDTV plasma - or whatever the prevailing flat panel technology is in the lead a few years from now - maybe LCD.
Have the Sony HD XBR 32" 16x9 and the picture IS amazing...but when I pull down the 72" screen and run the HD through the new Panasonic HD projector...now we are seeing something really special...wow... the Illinois/Arizona game in HD was truly the best HD experience I've seen.
that one big reason that I'm considering a flat screen is to move the 20" CRT to the bedroom and put the flat screen up on the mantle and in-between my speakers. In this sense, - I prefer a monitor anyway. (My mantle is only 12" deep).I guess that I'll just wait until I see how my new DVD/CDP comes back after the mod.
I only really care about music: but if the HDTVs in higher resolution will cost the same as the EDTVs do now, {in the summer}, I can also wait until the summer.

...look into one of the commercial HD plasma monitors from an e-tailer (there are several good ones, often running specials). They're less expensive than their consumer counterparts, although they lack some of the bells and whistles of consumer sets. If you're going to use it with your existing sound system you don't need consumer features on your plasma like built-in speakers.Check out the plasma forum at avsforum.com for all the hot scoop on plasmas.
That's exactly what I'm looking for.....less of a consumer product and more of a pro product....May I ask further if you have any leads on a good place to buy?

Not just for the plasma FAQs and discussions (which are enlightening to say the least), but also because the better etailers post their current and best deals over there. 1800 Plasmas, TV Authority...a couple others...you will see feedback over there aplenty. Most of these places do a big business in institutional sales (corporations/schools/businesses) so almost all these online folks have many commercial models to choose from.
I almost bought a 42" commercial Panny or Pioneer a couple years ago myself from 1800Plasmas but decided to wait for something a little large and more affordable. Pannys at the time had the best contrast and biggest bang for the buck - Pioneers had arguably better shadow detail. Plasmas have all come a long ways since then. You can check out the retail versions locally, then order the commercial ones online. Sweet.
What's BJ's?I guess that I'm looking for HDTV, not EDTV though. Those two terms are pretty confusing....
