I have a Toshiba SD-9200 D.V.D. player. Love it. Well, my remote has ceased to work. I ordered a replacement ($65.00 with shipping and handling). It has yet to arrive, and I expect it will take another week. The unit is very spartan, but it does contain a play button. Well, I tried to play a D.V.D. last night, intuitively hitting the play button once the menu appears. And nothing. Nada. It would not play the disc. It would work with The Bishop's Wife, the old Cary Grant film. But not the two newer discs I tried. That tells me that the unit is functioning. In any event, there were no problems when the remote was functioning. I reviewed the manual, and there is nothing there about me owning an expensive paperweight if the remote is broken. I called Toshiba, and their employee knew as much about the unit as the clerk who takes my money at the gas station. It seems to me that only a moron would design a D.V.D. player that cannot play a disc without a remote control, given how relatively common it is for a remote control to be lost, misplaced, or destroyed. Any ideas or experiences?

There are just as many morons in each field. Maybe the DVD was authored so that just pressing PLAY on the player won't get you to the movie. I have several DVDs like that.

I assume that is probably true. But these machines are no longer first generation, and I would think that hardware manufacturers would include a start button on the unit knowing this situation probably exists. My parents purchased a cheap Zenith combo player for my son, which is only slightly newer that my Toshiba, that does not have this problem. How a unit that carried a suggested retail price of $1,200.00 when I purchased it could not have that ability is beyond me.I posted this because I assume that many people like myself never gave playability without the remote a thought when we made the purchase. Believe me, it is frustrating. I would urge potential purchasers to consider this when they buy their machine, because at the rate players are discontinued, obtaining a new remote short of an expensive universal may be difficult when the player is discontinued.
