In a nutshell, it will use Blu-Ray for the physical media and the HD-DVD format for the software encoding. Look for the format "on disc" to be 1080p24 (this "output" may not be available from first gen players) and use VC-1 or H.264 (not sure if it will be Advanced Profile) for the video. It will offer up to 7.1 discrete channels of audio and, if lossless audio is used, it will be either DTS-HD Lossless or MLP (recently renamed Dolby Digital Lossless) -- sadly they don't have to offer lossless audio. If all goes well, look for an official announcement in a week or so. And like Pitt/Jolie, probably lots of denial until then.

Instead, we're just "closer" to a single format. More talks to come. Doesn't that just suck.

Big time.At least they're still "in-talks".
Too bad about the lossless audio, I'm thinking it doesn't have a prayer.

So when will I be able to replace my favorite (non-mainstream)movies in my DVD collection with hi-res discs, as well as buy whatever I wish on Hi-res, imports too.

Good to see that there will be no format warMy question has to do with the audio side ... will I need a new SSP to handle the audio on the HD DVD's or will my old Lexicon MC1 and beloved Cal Audio SSP still be usable ?
I'm guessing there will be enough room for an "old style" DTS or DD track, as well as the new 7.1 discreet format, much in the same way stereo audio tracks on DVD are still encoded in Pro Logic. For the new 7.1 discreet formats, you'll probably need a new decoder. I doubt they'd do a firmware update for the old MC1, but the current generation SSP's probably can be upgraded to support it.

Guess we will just have to wait and see ... Thanks Dave
