  The target is always moving but that's the standard today. I would not replace a device just because it lacked HDMI but, otoh, I would not buy one today that lacked HDMI.

    Hi Kal - I was considering a new processor to replace my Denon receiver but unfortunately, most do not have HDMI. What are they waiting for? Many DVD players, TV's, Satellite Set-top-boxes, and HDTV tuners have HDMI outputs so why are the processor manufacturers so far behind? What are they waiting for? What do they know that we don't?

      Well, I have a Denon now which has it and most of their other models do. What they know is that older STBs (such as the SA3250HD that I have) do not tolerate well an active switcher on their outputs. Works OK direct to PDP. Not Denon's fault but it is frustrating that I can switch HDMI-linked players but must use component for this STB. Cable Co. says the output is not functional but I find it is dysfunctional.
      Still, I would not buy a new unit without HDMI.

        I think I'll keep what I have for now which is the Denon 3803 receiver. I use it as a processor and to drive the center and rear channels. The main front channels go through my preamp theater bypass then on to the main power amp.
        I was hoping to find a better selection of dedicated processors wtih HDMI but they are very few. It would also be nice to find a processor with an outstanding analog preamp section - so I can get rid of the dedicated 2-channel preamp. I'm probably asking for too much.

        Maybe I'm confused but my hope for HDMI, at least for a home theater setup, is to minimize the number of cables.
        I believe HDMI will (eventually) do this as it is supposed to carry multiple digital audio channels as well as the video signal - right? And I think this is where most manufacturers are not quite on board and on the same page, yet.

        I have no interest in the audio portion of HDMI, at least at present. For example, it will not yet carry MCH SACD. Consequently, I prefer to keep the audio and video separate and use a programmable remote to switch them in synchrony most of the time or not (so I can watch a football game while listening to music).
