having had great results with the SCE buffer stage inserted between my cable box and the toob (much clearer upper frequencies, distinctly improved dynamics, credible bass.... without it the sound collapses into grey lifeless grime)... I was curious if anyone has has experience with the active Digital Antidote II, should function both as a buffer stage and a signal de-randomizer... this came to me when I thought of how many stages of digital recording, post production manipulations, and broadcast technology the original audio has been wrestled through.... the Taddeo concept is rather ingenious and simple... the analog signal is delayed by 16 microseconds then added back to an undelayed signal, which should result in a "moving average" or smoothed data stream that would integrate the multitude of blips, grits, signal outliers into a more elegant soundfield.... the old rumors were that the worse the original signal, the better the Antidote worked... and given that television/cable sound is generally badly contaminated junk, this migh be a great use for an underappreciated old tweak...

alright... the active version of the Digital Antidote II has been switched for my old trusty HRS (also out of production) box... my first experience in a public media setting.. all the good, bad, and wretched stuff that my Time Warner service has to offer... what was absolutely fascinating is that the seriously crappy signal still sounded seriously crappy, there was nothing deeper buried in the message to extract... OTOH, higher resolution, better quality stuff where there was latent information did show a marked increase in auditory believability... there was a "wetness" and a distinction between higher and intermediate frequencies that was not present before... clearly the Taddeo technolgy can unravel some of the damage that cable transmission does to the signal... however, the HRS is more dynamic... take it out and an essential punch is gone... have to wonder how many costly DVD players suffer from this same loss of vitality, unless you want to use a $$$$ full function preamp to act as your buffer...the Taddeo somehow made the whole presentation more satisfying albeit a touch dynamically flat, however there was something interesting, analog like, compelling about the sound that all the digital steps along the way really do, even in this advanced age of moviemaking, seriously screw up... it's like the digital workstations, editing decks, EQs, compressors, weirdly moronize the final result, and that's the great majority, damn near the totality of what were getting...

the DA takes time to warm up and settle in. At first the sound can be constricted and midrangy. I lined mine about 3/4 with ERS cloth to control box resonances and stray RF in the neighborhood. After a week I am blown away by how involving, seductive, interesting the better soundtracks are, Matrix Reloaded, Training Day, Hannibal Lecter stuff where the engineers knew what they were doing... the DA doesn't do to much for crappy reality tv sound, theres not a lot there to save from itself... the DA clearly and obviously unsnarls some form of damage done to the audio signal in the broadacast process. I haven't enjoyed watching (and listening) cable TV like this in years, although it was "correct"....
