I went with the Mitsubishi HC-3, ($899)
All the reviews look good.
Sanyo now has a similarly priced true HDTV unit BUT its not nearly as bright as the HC3. In my semi daylight situation I think the Mitsu will excel. In a basement setup the Sanyo might be the unit of choice.Should show up in a week or so.
Still debating on screen whether I'm going to make a permanent mount from cloth and wood or get a roll-down. i need to try the projector and see what type of screen mount makes sense. A good project for the holidays!

Follow Ups:
Once we went front projection about 2 years ago, it make me wonder why we waited so long! I went from 36 to 92 inches. And when listening to music, it's nice to not have a giant box between speakers. Sure it's only 2 channel, but we feel like we have a screening room our basement. I'm sure it will knock your socks off. Please enjoy and report back.
Going to a PJ not only gave a nice, clear and huge picture (84" from 35"), but freed up a lot of room for better sound as well (no big screen between the speakers). Let us know how it all works out in your semi-light room. Mine is in a 100% light controlled room, so my X1 is just fine.
