For an 18 by 13 room, 5.1 is plenty. I would recommend a receiver as there are not many separates which offer a really significant increase in sound quality over a decent receiver with discrete devices in the output stage and a high current capability. I'd much rather keep my two channel totally separate from my surround system.....

.. he has $80,000 to spend on his system. Even if the difference were very slight, he can easily afford it. For an $8000 system fine, for an $80,000 system why not go separates?
