I'd do the latter. On a budget I like Pioneer VSX 516K (7.1, lots of bells and whistles. Currently 179 at circuit city but watch for a better sale price. Last week it was $169.)
If you need more speaker pairs you could do worse than Best Buy Insignias at $50 the pair (sometimes cheaper--havent checked today).Pull out your Sub from storage and you are set!

Thanks! I already got the sub out. I noticed the Insignias at Best Buy and thought they looked unusually good for being so cheap. After reading all the reviews, I might give them a go. Can't lose much.

  Since there is a 30 day return policy for whatever reason if you don't like them.
  I believe Circuity City has been selling Infinity speakers on the cheap that you may want to look into also.
