For now I will set a price arbitrarily at $1000 to $1500. It doesnt matter if it is CRT, Plasma, or LCD but want a built in ATSC tuner ( I like CRT astheticaly). Im not sure on projection for now.I can sit close to the set--- like less than 8 feet.
Im sort of looking for a bargain. I'm in San Diego. I can see the antenna for Two channels, but most of the others are at least 20 to 25 miles away and may not be line of sight.Im pretty sure there is a mountain in the way.I know there is wesite somewhere that figures out the signal strength for your location. I live in a condo so--- no outside antennas. I wont be getting cable for a while but may have to some time in the future.

Then when you check out the Plasma's and LCD's in the stores
or Bar's, your thank yourself for buying that heavy tube set.
Other then their larger size, well you'll see.
BTW before placing the TV on it's stand.
Screw 14 2" ball casters on it's bottom.
This way you can push the TV around the house or room as needed.
That's the one draw back to a CRT unit. 201 lbs + stand.

getting hi def means getting all the pieces of hi def together.
You just told me you can't afford a good tv that's big enough, that you can't afford a hi def signal.
Put the money in the bank, add a few bucks a week. Keep an eye out for
a new technology that looks like plasma but is made up of thousands of tiny CRT cells.

  SED is going to be a while-it keeps getting postponed. Supposedly, it will be available in Japan Q1 '07, who knows when it will hit the US. It will be 50" and I've heard projected prices anywhere from $5K-$10K, though I suspect the former is closer to reality.

  What new technology should I keep an eye out for? Is there something new in the research department thats ready to come out?

  Your right in not taking any compromises if you want the best picture. Another factor in this equation is that big screen prices keep coming down and down---sort of like what computers did a few years ago.
  With Outboard tuners or any thing outboard for that matter they never quite integrate as well as a built in tuner.
  Anothe thing is that waiting for all these technologies to come together (Blu-ray, HD-DVD,etc) is that the whole system will integrate at its best when the manufacturers have all these tools to work with.

    Hi,
    subscribe to a home theater mag or two. It will go over all that stuff.
    My 2 cents....
    1) when you do pick, just pick a screen you like that is 40-50 inches.
    2) if you want to go crazy, do it buying the sub.
    3) many rooms are just too small for surround sound
    4) Don't worry about specs. Learn what the obvious mistales are and buy s theater that is nice, but doesn't break the bank.
    5) Acoustic treaments... are great.

Look down the main Video Asylum page for my response entitled " here's a 42" model " for a 1920x1080 display suggestion in your budget. As for an ATSC receiver, you can get one for $200 or less to add to the suggested display.
For good reception, mountains may be a problem. You may have to get cable if reception in your area isn't good enough for a quality signal. No antennas or dish receivers won't help with reception.
